In 1943, Alumnae Chapters of Sigma Gamma Rho, Sorority saw the need to embrace women without bachelors degrees, yet women of the highest caliber. These women possessed outstanding religious, educational, civic, and social connections.
Moreover, the were women who were substantial and dependable, exerting the energy and willingness to be active participants in helping Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority rendering service to humankind and improving the community.
United in the common cause of uplifting the community, Sigma Gamma Rho officially approved the Philo, meaning ‘friend’, as an affiliate in 1954, extending the network of true sisterhood.
Each Philo Affiliate is sponsored by the local alumni chapter, in this case, Eta Xi Sigma Alumnae Chapter, and is expected to adhere to the policies and procedures of the Sorority. The structure of the Philos Affiliates mirrors the sorority in that Philos are organized to meet locally, regionally, and internationally.
Activities associated with Eta Xi Sigma Alumnae Chapter include:
March of Dimes Walk
Philo Tea Fundraiser
Annual Youth Symposium
Buckle Up America
Eta Xi Sigma Scholarship Fundraisers
Breast Cancer Walk
Philos contribute significantly to scholarship funds at the local, regional, national and international level. In addition, Philos are involved in NAACP, March of Dimes, and numerous other Sigma Gamma Rho community service projects and national program.
